UN Karmaveer Chakra award for Sikkimese social entrepreneur

GANGTOK,: Sikkimese fashion designer and social entrepreneur Omi Gurung was awarded United Nations Karmaveer Chakra (Gold) 2023 award at the 12th Rex Conclive and award ceremony event held at Shiv Nadar School, Faridabad on Sunday.

The award has been conferred to Gurung for his outstanding contribution towards sustainable fashion and pro-actively creating awareness about climate change in the world, a press release informs.

Omi, a resident of Gangtok, is a global youth ambassador for Earthday Organisation.

“We all need to do our bit for the environment, it is no longer about climate change, today it is about climate crisis. We need to take responsibility for our own action. It is not the future generations who will have to bear the brunt of climate crisis, but we the people,” he said.

The fashion designer added: “I would like to thank United Nations and ICONGO for conferring this prestigious award on me. It motivates me to do more and be a force of good.”

Instituted in 2008-09 by Indian Confederation of NGOs (iCONGO) in association with the UN, Karmaveer Chakra is the national medallion for proactive voluntary action to ‘Be the Change’. The award is tribute to A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, 11th President of India, who had offered to be the ambassador for the awards and international volunteering olympiad.

Verghese Kurien, known as father of the white revolution of India, is the first recipient of UN Karmaveer lifetime achievement award.

Omi Gurung had received the UN Karamveer Chakra (Silver) Award 2019 in the 11th Season held at Ramagya International School, NCR. He is the first person from Sikkim to receive both the gold and silver UN Karmaveer Chakra awards for being a “change in the world”, the release informs.
