GANGTOK, :Ferry Tale Pictures, in
collaboration with Hope Reels, LA-7 Shorts, Baral Studios and Kiwa Production,
has announced the official launch of the trailer for their feature film ‘Jaar’.
The
trailer, which is now live on OSR Digital’s YouTube channel, offers audiences
their first glimpse into one of the most visually and emotionally ambitious
films ever produced in the Nepali language. The trailer was unveiled during an
event held in Kathmandu on Thursday, giving audiences a glimpse into the
storyline and the characters’ roles.
Actors
Saugat Malla, Anoop Bikram Shahi and music director Jhuma Limbu, who were present
in the event, also shared their pride in being part of a project they consider
historically significant, informs a press release.
Set
in the late 19th century, ‘Jaar’ is adapted from a celebrated short story by
Sahitya Akademi Award winning Nepali writer and literary critic Indra Bahadur Rai.
The film brings his work to life with rare nuance, capturing the unspoken
tensions of lineage, shame and dignity, against the backdrop of a society on
the cusp of change.
Directed
by Phurba Tshering Lama, whose earlier works have earned critical acclaim for
their depth and realism, ‘Jaar’ marks his debut into feature-length filmmaking.
The cast includes Geetanjali Thapa, Saugat Malla and Anoop Bikram Shahi, along with
powerful performances from community actors in Sikkim and Darjeeling. The film
also makes a bold technical leap forward, incorporating the first-ever CGI-VFX
tiger in Nepali cinema, blending realism with visual storytelling in a way
never seen before.
“JAAR
is a reckoning with our past. It asks what we inherit, what we silence, and how
memory shapes identity. We didn’t just want to recreate history—we wanted to
feel its weight, its breath, its echo in the present,” states director
Phurba Tshering in the release.
“Filmed
in Sikkim, the production is a testimony to community-driven filmmaking. Backed
by dozens of local families, crowd funders, and regional artists, JAAR not only
reflects the richness of Nepali heritage but also the spirit of collective
creation.”
The
cinematic release is slated for May 9. The film will premiere in key locations
across Sikkim, Darjeeling, Siliguri and Kathmandu, and will be distributed
internationally through 7Seas Cinema, with a special focus on audiences in the
USA, UK, Australia, Singapore and Nepal’s global diaspora.
