World Environment Day themed ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ celebrated at Pakyong district

PAKYONG,: The World Environment Day on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ for Pakyong district was celebrated here at Pachey Baudha Gumpa complex by the Forest and Environment department.

On the occasion, the ‘Mero Rukh Mero Santati’ initiative of the State government was launched for Pakyong district where the parents of newly born children were give certificates and saplings for planation.

In his address, Namcheybong MLA Em Prashad Sharma said the ‘Mero Rukh Mero Santati’ is a futuristic initiative of Chief Minister PS Golay for environment protection and a step against climate change.

Our government is also looking into the massive market circulation of small bottles of energy drinks which needs to banned in consultation with all as plastic harms our environment, said the MLA.

Pakyong DFO (territorial) Thenmozhi V. informed that at present, there are over 530 registered parents under ‘Mero Rukh Mero Santati’ who are given certificates and saplings for plantation.

The parents can plant the given saplings in private, community or government land during the rainy season from June to August.

Parents who register their names after May 31, 2023 till May 31, 2024 will be given the opportunity to plant saplings from June 2024 onwards.

Kumari Manger from Namcheybong Daragaon had registered for the ‘Mero Rukh Mero Santati’ mission. “We will plant the saplings received from the Forest department in our private land. We are thankful to the government for making a part of this initiative,” she said.

On the occasion, two government nursery workers Lal Bahadur Gurung of Kartok Nursery and Kubir Rai of Rangpo Range were given certificates of appreciation for growing and nurturing plants since many years.

Also present on the occasion was Rhenock MLA Bishnu Kumar Khatiwada, advisor Inchung Bhutia, advisor Dubo Tshering Bhutia, zilla upadhyaksha Prabha Pradhan, APS Bishal Sharma, DC Tashi Chophel Lepehca, SP Karma Gyamtso Bhutia, and others.

Earlier, a cleanliness drive was organised from Pakyong Bazaar to Pachey during which plastic wastes were collected from the roadsides.

Similarly, Carmel Teachers Training Institute Pakyong also celebrated World Environment Day by planting saplings of herbal plants, ornamental plants and vegetables plants around the campus. A cleanliness drive was conducted at the campus and Noapgaon area.
