GANGTOK,: Independent candidate Yogesh Chettri has covered around 60% of Daragaon-Lumsey ward, GMC during his election campaign so far. He is reaching out to the voters with his election symbol ‘candle’ and programmes for the development of Daragaon-Lumsey ward.
Speaking with SIKKIM EXPRESS on his election campaign, the 32-year-old candidate said: “We have covered almost 60% of the ward. We are reaching out to the voters and taking note of their issues. We are preparing a database on their grievances and requirements so we can address them in coming days.”
Daragaon-Lumsey is one of the largest wards in GMC with around 4369 voters.
Yogesh lists proper drainage system for Daragaon-Lumsey as a crucial civic agenda for him and the residents. “Daragaon is on a sloping terrain and proper drainage system is most crucial. Water is flowing into buildings as there are no proper drains causing damage to the structures,” he said.
The candidate also plans to establish a public toilet at the waiting shed near SBI bank, Daragaon considering the expansion of Daragaon as a commercial hub.
“For the elderly and children, we have thought of developing the vacant SNT colony land into public use. Earlier we had done a signature campaign wherein the local residents wanted to have a community hall and children’s park at the vacant land. The park can be a recreational sport for the elderly and children while the community hall would be used for social programmes. We will take this up with the government,” he said.
Yogesh added that he is building a team during the campaign so they can work together for development of Daragaon-Lumsey. “We have a team and more are joining this team. We will work together for the development of the ward and address the problems faced by the local residents. We have many programmes and plans which we will take up in consultation with the people and in a transparent manner.”
The candidate thanked Chief Minister P.S. Golay for making the municipal election non-political party based. This has given an opportunity for people to come forward and contest as independent candidates with an aim to serve their locality, he said.
Besides Yogesh Chettri, the other two candidates from Daragaon-Lumsey are Milan Gautam and Daya Ram Bhattarai.
