GANGTOK,: Well-known writer Gadul Singh Lama’s two new books were unveiled by Education minister Kunga Nima Lepcha today in a function held at Manan Kendra here. The books were ‘Himalchuli Mantira’ and ‘Jaha Bagcha Teesta Rangeet’, which is named after a popular song of the same name by Lama.
Lama, a Padma Shri recipient, is one of the most popular and widely read Nepali writers in the country. He is popularly known as Sanu Lama in the literary circle.
Minister Lepcha said ‘Himalchuli Mantira’ depicts rural livelihood and encouraged everyone to read the book. “The scenario, hardship and struggle that are mentioned there in ‘Himalchuli Mantira’ must be known by all. I feel this book should be made available in all school libraries and even in panchayat libraries across the State,” said Lepcha.
Speaking during the book release function organised by Sikkim Kalakar Sangh, Lepcha said that the government is committed to provide platforms to foster art and literature in the State.
The minister also informed that the song ‘Jaha Bagcha Teesta Rangeet’ depicts the beauty of the State and the government is planning to make it an official State song. “We will discuss the matter with the Chief Minister and definitely place it in the upcoming Cabinet meeting as well,” said Lepcha.
Lama said ‘Himalchuli Mantira’ would not have been possible if not for retired chief secretary and the then Rural Development secretary P.K. Pradhan. Lama was in Rural Development department when Pradhan was the secretary. “P.K. Pradhan is the protagonist of the book and it was under his leadership, we, during that era, could do a lot for the development of rural areas,” said Lama.
During his address, Lama also remembered all his colleagues and staff whom he had worked with. He also requested the State government for a provision of annual grant to the registered and recognised organisations who have been working in the field of literature and art so that more works can be initiated for safeguarding and promotion of art and literature.
Lama also mentioned that Nepali Language is under threat and it is high time for all to work towards safeguarding the language.
The function, also addressed by P.K. Pradhan, Sikkim Kalakar Sangh president C.L. Ghimiray and others, had the presence of Education additional chief secretary G.P. Upadhyaya, director (Primary Education), and writers, poets and artists from both within and outside the State.
