GANGTOK: Active football in the State may be some months away but Sikkim Himalayan SC has jumped into an early pre-season training starting Monday here at Paljor Stadium. Members of the club, including those retained from the last season and newly recruited footballers along with the senior players of the club academy, turned up with enthusiasm for the new season.

Sikkim Himalayan SC is a ‘A’ division club of Sikkim and last year, managed to reach the final of the Governor’s Gold Cup.

On the first day, besides giving audition for a Bollywood movie which requires footballers, the Sikkim Himalayan SC players did light training under the watchful eyes of coach Pranay Subba and club owner Tenzing Lamtha.

“We have started the training of Sikkim Himalayan SC for the season from Monday. This season, we are giving opportunities to the young players and targeting to do good in Sikkim A Division League, Independence Cup, Governor’s Gold Cup and other tournaments within and outside the State. We have many changes this season by fielding young players and aim to do better than last year for which we have started the training early,” said coach Pranay Subba.

Speaking with SIKKIM EXPRESS, club owner Tenzing Lamtha informed that the club academy players – training since last five years - have attained the right age to play at senior competitive levels. Our academy players proved last year by doing well in a Soreng football tournament and now we feel that time has come to give the responsibility and platform to our academy players, said Lamtha.

“This season, we will field completely local kids of Sikkim in our club. We will give them full training for two months and prepare for the season ahead. We will field our younger players in the first two tournaments of the season where they have to prove themselves. We have high expectations for this season and we have faith on our local players that we will sweep the major tournaments. There are some areas which need work and we are working on it,” said Lamtha.

The Sikkim Himalayan SC founder pointed out that a healthy sports environment has been created in Sikkim under the new government. “There seems to infusion of a sudden energy in sports all over Sikkim. We can see that some sports are taking place across the State every day. We are thankful to the Chief Minister and the Sports minister for giving importance to sports development in Sikkim,” he said.
