RANGPO,: Ircon International Limited on Saturday announced that a 1,406-meter tunnel located between Tarkhola and Shukia Khola on the West Bengal portion of Sevoke-Rangpo rail project has achieved breakthrough.

The breakthrough was made on tunnel number 12 that traverses through vulnerable and challenging geological conditions of the lesser Himalayan range. To counter vulnerability of the groundmass, New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) was adopted.

This is the fifth tunnel to achieve breakthrough.

The 45-km Sevoke-Rangpo broad gauge rail line project consists of 14 tunnels, 17 bridges and five stations. At least 38.65 kms of the entire project alignment passes through tunnels, out of which 25.094 km (65%) of tunnel mining work has been completed. The project is expected to be completed by December 2023.
