Centre has formulated action plan for early restoration of road connectivity in Sikkim: MoS

GANGTOK,: The Centre has formulated an action plan for early restoration of connectivity in Sikkim, especially the roads leading to the Indo-China border in North Sikkim. This was communicated to Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba by MoS (Defence) Sanjay Seth in response to his representation for repair and restoration of North Sikkim roads.

“The matter has been examined. In this regard, it is informed that a meeting was convened by the cabinet secretary on 5th August 2024 with secretaries of concerned ministries on the requirement of concerted efforts for restoration of road infrastructure in Sikkim. Based on the discussions held during that meeting, an action plan has been formulated for early restoration of connectivity in Sikkim,” replied the MoS (Defence) in his letter to the Lok Sabha MP on September 23.

Further, the BRO, which maintains the roads connecting the Indo-China border in Sikkim, has restored connectivity at many stretches. However, restoration of other stretches is taking time due to Cyclone Remal and heavy rains, the MoS said.

Regarding NH 310A and NH 310AG, the same has been entrusted by the Defence ministry to the Road Transport & Highways ministry on July 8 and efforts are underway for expeditious work commencement, it was informed.

“Cooperation of Sikkim government will be required for expediting land acquisition and Forest clearance to enable timely sanction and work commencement. Meanwhile, BRO has been making best effort for restoration of the roads and ensuring connectivity wherever need arises,” said the MoS.

Indra Hang Subba, the lone Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim, had been consistently raising the issue of urgent road restoration in Sikkim with the concerned ministries in New Delhi and also in the Parliament. He had also submitted a memorandum to the MoS (Defence) Sanjay Seth on July 31 with an urgent request for immediate repair and restoration of roads in North Sikkim

Indra Hang had highlighted the critical situation of the roads in North Sikkim, particularly along the NH 310A and roads connecting the Indo-China border maintained by the BRO.
