First five-wicket haul for Sumit Singh

GANGTOK,: Sumit Singh picked up his first five-wicket haul in Vijay Hazare Trophy as he finished with figures of five for 69 against Meghalaya at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.

Sumit, who performed brilliantly with both bat and ball in the tournament, gave Sikkim early breakthrough, trapping C.G. Khurana for a leg before in the sixth over of the innings.

He returned with another fine spell when Meghalaya were looking to accelerate. The right-arm medium pacer struck twice in the 31st over conceding just a run as he removed Tiwari for 27 and Punit Bisht for eight off consecutive deliveries.

During the death overs with Lerry looking in wonderful touch, the Sikkim seamer struck Lerry for 45.  He bagged his fifth wicket in the same over.

His haul of 5/69 is the second best by Sikkim player in List A cricket. Padam Limboo holds the record for the best bowling in an innings. He picked up 6/20 during the match against Mizoram at Dehradun in 2019.

Despite Sumit’s excellent spell, Meghalaya managed a decent score of 226/9 in their allotted 50 overs. Chasing 227 for victory, the Sikkim batting fell apart as they were dismissed for 167 runs.

Sumit had taken six wickets in six matches before Wednesday with the previous best of 2/31 against Rajasthan on November 13.

Likewise, he accumulated 188 runs in the tournament and with high scores of 53, 42 and 37.

The former Services player has 43 scalps in 31 List A matches at an average of 24.34.
