SORENG,: Chief Minister P.S. Golay, who attended
the concluding day of Jorethang Maghey Mela on Tuesday, described the event as
“historic” in many aspects.
“Maghey Mela this year was able to draw
a massive turnout and provided opportunities for people to benefit in various
ways. Initiative such as Maghey Mela comes with opportunities for the locals to
get involved not only in entrepreneurial ventures but also in other
constructive activities. It is upto the people to grab the availed
opportunities and benefits,” he said.
The Chief Minister emphasized the
cultural significance of the Jorethang Maghey Mela and pitched for promotion
and recognition of Jorethang Maghey Mela in the global platform with a
suggestion that Jorethang Maghey Mela could be evolved as an international
event in a similar way to Hornbill Festival of Nagaland. “From a State level
event, we want to promote Jorethang Maghey Mela as a national level festival
such as Hornbill Festival of Nagaland. It (Jorethang Maghey Mela) should have a
national level recognition. It is up to us and we are working to that end,”
Golay said.
Golay also advised the organizing
committee to identify and address this year’s shortcomings to enhance the Mela’s
management in the future.
Further, the Chief Minister announced
plans to lay artificial turf on Jorethang ground with the Chief Minister’s Gold
Cup to be played on the artificial turf next year. To alleviate congestion and
provide adequate space for the Mela, Golay revealed plans to develop a separate
riverside venue near Jorethang Bazaar for next year’s festival. This new venue,
he said, would decongest the bazaar area and ensure smooth business operations
for local traders.
On the occasion, Golay declared that all
ongoing melas across the State should conclude by Tuesday midnight. He
explained that this decision was taken to ensure a conducive environment for
students preparing for the upcoming class 10 and 12 board exams scheduled for
February this year.
“No more melas now, as the board exams
are approaching. District collectors across the State have been instructed to
take responsibility and ensure all melas under their jurisdictions are shut
down,” the Chief Minister said.
