GANGTOK, : The glacial lake study team on Monday conducted a Participatory
Rural Appraisal (PRA) exercise at Lachung Dzumsa. The Land Revenue &
Disaster Management department team was led by secretary-cum-Relief
Commissioner Namrata Thapa.
A
press release informs that SSDMA additional secretary Parina Gurung and Pema Y
Bhutia from QRT conducted the PRA exercise. The team was joined by Science
& Technology secretary Dr Sandeep Tambe and Mines & Geology secretary
Decky Yangzom.
The
additional secretary informed the public regarding the threat of GLOF in the State
and in particular for Lachung. She informed that the Tenchungkha Lake has been
identified by the NDMA among the 16 vulnerable lakes of Sikkim, the release
mentions.
The
objective of the PRA exercise was to prepare evacuation maps for the vulnerable
villages of Lachung. This was done to enable the villagers to save themselves
in case of breach of lake, the release states.
Pema
Yankee conducted PRA exercise, wherein the locals of the area identified the
habitats, evacuation routes, safe places etc.
