GANGTOK: Sikkimese footballer Kunal Tamang will be playing in the upcoming AFC Cup qualifiers 2020 for Bhutanese club Paro FC.
Tamang along with his Paro FC teammates is presently at Colombo, Sri Lanka where the Bhutan club will play against Sri Lankan champions Defenders FC on January 22.
Tamang, a versatile defender, hails from Manbir Colony, Gangtok. He started his football career with Boys Club Gangtok and has been a part of State Sports Academy, United Sikkim FC and Sikkim Himalayan SC teams.
Talking to SIKKIM EXPRESS over phone, Kunal expressed that he is excited to debut in AFC qualifiers with this club. “I am here in Bhutan since December and I like the environment here both professionally and personally. I have mixed with my team mates well and since we share similar tradition and culture, I did not find difficulties in adjusting myself. The clubs and players have immense knowledge and respect towards the game including the spectators which is a delightful sight,” expressed Tamang.
Tamang also rued over lack of regular tournaments in Sikkim. “We don’t have many tournaments. Even the local leagues hardly last for a week which makes the players unfit and lead to below par performance in the national and northeast level tournaments. We have good talents but due to lack of continuity we are unable to grow professionally,” he said.
Kunal aims to play for his country and be a part of good clubs in the future.
