Surge in Sikkim Science Centre visitors

GANGTOK,: The Sikkim Science Centre, located at Namli near Ranipool, has witnessed a remarkable surge in visitor numbers this year.

Established in 2008 through a collaborative initiative of National Council of Science Museums under the Ministry of Culture and State Science & Technology department, the center has experienced a substantial increase in visitor numbers over recent months.

This rise, the department said in a press statement, reflects the growing popularity of its interactive exhibits, educational workshops, and cutting-edge scientific installations.

Between April and October 2024, the centre recorded 3,181 visitors, a more than twofold increase from 1,117 visitors during the same period in 2023. This growth is attributed to strategic networking with stakeholders, strong support from the Education department, enhanced facilities, an active social media presence and personalized attention to visitors.

The Sikkim Science Centre offers a diverse range of interactive exhibits and educational experiences. Its state-of-the-art digital planetarium, 3D film theatre, science galleries, innovation hub, children’s activity corner, and expansive science park provide hands-on exposure to scientific principles and real-world applications.

The innovation hub has been particularly successful, engaging 88 member schools in workshops on robotics, physical and life sciences, electronics, and computer programming. Career counseling and motivational sessions focusing on STEM disciplines have further enhanced its impact on students, the release mentions.

The centre’s visitor timings are from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm and remains open on all days, including weekends and holidays, except Mondays, the release mentions.
