GANGTOK,: A 15-member SDF delegation led by party president and former Chief
Minister Pawan Chamling called on Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at the Raj
Bhawan here on Wednesday.
Chamling presented
a memorandum to the Governor outlining the circumstances of the incident of
violence unleashed on the SDF cadres by the SKM goons in Rinchenpong on
December 4, a SDF release states.
Showing
the photographs and explaining the issues, the Governor gave a patient hearing
to the delegates. One of our cadres who were subjected to the attack was also
present in the delegation and he described in detail the sequence of events
whilst also answering the Governor’s incisive questions, said the SDF.
“Chamling
also gave a summary of the high handedness of the present government and
emphasised that not one person was arrested, or charge sheeted for all these
incidents that have happened over the last four and half years. Miscarriage of
justice has been rampant. He informed the Governor that democracy was non-existent
in the State as of now,” the SDF release states.
In its
memorandum, the SDF demanded the right of assembly and other fundamental rights
given under the Constitution of India be ensured besides to provide a level
playing field leading up to the elections. Demand for establishing President’s
Rule in the State forthwith was also emphasised, said the SDF.
The SDF
added that the Governor assured the party delegation that he would inquire into
the matter and would ensure that the rule of law is followed in letter and
spirit. He also said that the rights given under the Constitution of India will
be protected for all Sikkimese people.
“We noted,
before him, that after his assuming office in February 20, 2023, and our first
memorandum to him, the situation was quite calm in the State till this incident
in Rinchenpong,” said the SDF.
Later
speaking to the media, Chamling thanked the Governor for a positive response to
the issues raised by the SDF party.
“The
Governor has assured us that Constitutional rights will be ensured in Sikkim
and democracy and people would be protected. If any such activity happens
henceforth, the Raj Bhawan will ensure security for the people. We are thankful
to receive such assurances from the Constitutional head,” said the former Chief
Minister.
