CM inaugurates Yangthang Farms in Pelling

GYALSHING, (IPR): Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang today inaugurated the newly developed "Yangthang Farms" in Pelling, Gyalshing.

Initiated by the Thakarpa family of Pelling, Yangthang Farms is a multi-faceted venture that includes an Orchidarium, a museum of Sikkimese antiques, a bird sanctuary, and the historic Yangthang Dzong, also known as Yangthang Palace, one of the surviving examples of Sikkim's rich architectural heritage.

The farm is owned by DN Thakarpa, former Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, R. Ongmu, former Chief Administrator, Government of Sikkim, Karma Thinlay Thakarpa (son), a social worker and government contractor and managed by the Thakarpa family. The project emphasizes Sikkim's natural beauty and cultural significance.

The Orchidarium showcases a rare collection of orchids, many of which are native to Sikkim, symbolizing the rich biodiversity of the region. These orchids are difficult to find elsewhere, further enhancing the significance of the site.

The museum within Yangthang Farms preserves Sikkim's rich history by displaying rare artefacts, antiques, and relics that reflect the State's cultural traditions. The collection includes traditional tools, clothing, art pieces, and manuscripts, ensuring that Sikkim's heritage is passed on to future generations.

Additionally, the Bird Sanctuary houses both exotic and indigenous bird species, offering visitors a chance to observe Sikkim's avian diversity while promoting conservation efforts.

Among the significant features of the property is Yangthang Dzong, a palace over a century old that represents traditional architecture. This rare structure is one of the last of its kind in Sikkim, providing visitors a glimpse into the lifestyle and cultural practices of the community.

During the inauguration, the Chief Minister praised the Thakarpa family for their dedication to preserving Sikkim's cultural and natural heritage. He emphasized the importance of protecting such initiatives for future generations, noting their role in showcasing the state's history, art, and biodiversity.

The initiative was commended as one of the finest examples of heritage preservation in the State.

Yangthang Farms not only preserves Sikkim's cultural legacy but also serves as a major tourism attraction, drawing visitors from across the region and beyond.
