GANGTOK, : LokSabha MP Indra Hang Subba on Tuesday attended an important meeting
of the Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution
held in New Delhi. The meeting was chaired by Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, MP and chairperson
of the committee, a press release informs.
The
agenda of the meeting included crucial discussions on procurement and distribution
of food grains, supply to consumer States, and storage and modern Technologies
for food grains preservation.
During
the meeting, Indra Hang took the opportunity to highlight State-specific issues
related to Sikkim, especially in the context of storage, transportation, and
supply of quality food grains to beneficiaries under the public distribution
system (PDS).
He
emphasized the need for buffer storage infrastructure in Sikkim, citing the
increasing occurrences of natural calamities such as flash floods in the
region. He urged the concerned departments to explore modern and
climate-resilient storage technologies suitable for the Himalayan terrain.
Further,
the LokSabha MP from Sikkim called for strengthened supply chains to ensure
seamless delivery of food grains across challenging geographies in the country.
He highlighted that the quality and timely distribution of essential food items
must be a national priority, especially in states like Sikkim where
accessibility often becomes difficult during adverse weather conditions.
Indra
Hang also acknowledged the committee’s efforts and reaffirmed his commitment to
working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure food security and
consumer welfare in Sikkim and across the country, the release mentions.
