GANGTOK,(PIB): A workshop on identification, impounding and disposal of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) was held at Police Headquarters, here on March 9.
The workshop was organised by RBI, Kolkata with the support of RBI, Gangtok and Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Pvt. Ltd. (BRBNMPL), Salboni.
The programme was conceived and executed by Kolkata RBI General Manager Anindita Bhattachary and SP (CID) Tenzing Loden Lepcha for enhancing the awareness of State Police personnel and bank officials in detecting FICN through special security features of genuine bank notes vis-à-vis impounding and reporting cases of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN).
The workshop was inaugurated by Sikkim Police Special DGP A. Sudhakar Rao, along with West Bengal and Sikkim regional director Susobhan Sinha.
Susobhan Sinha underlined the importance of FICN detection, impounding and emphasised that it is also important that the bank officials should remain alert and vigilant for detection and prompt reporting of FICNs while dealing over the counter. A. Sudhakar Rao in his address advised all police officials to be aware of various security features of genuine notes, especially the notes of the new series.
Gangtok RBI CGM Ravindra V. Sangvai explained the coloured posters displaying the security features of new series notes in both English and Nepali languages which were earlier supplied to Police department to disseminate awareness.
Gangtok RBI GM Chetan N Balwir shared his experiences with the audience in dealing with FICN.
Tenzing Loden Lepcha urged the banks to sensitise their staff to not return or destroy fake notes detected at counters and report the same promptly to police. This would help in recording the chain of evidence, apprehend criminals within reasonable time and correct identification of the source.
A team from Kolkata Issue department comprising DGM Onsing Marchang, manager Aakash Vats and assistant manager Dharmendra Prasad along with Shri Salboni BRBNMPL manager Sourav Shome demonstrated the overt and the covert security features of the new series banknotes and easy identification of FICN with the help of hand held Note Authentication Machines, UV lamp and even in plain sight.
A practical demonstration on detecting fake notes using ultra violet lamp was also done. The procedure to be followed by banks on detection of FICN and the reporting thereof which is of paramount importance was briefed by Aakash Vats.
Around thirty-five officials from Sikkim Police and ten bank officials attended the workshop.
