Sikkim to host Northeast Team Chess Championship

GANGTOK,: Sikkim Chess Association (SCA), under the aegis of All India Chess Federation, is geared to organize the first-of-its-kind Northeast Team Chess Championship at Janta Bhawan here from October 20 to 23.

Sikkim will be hosting the first Northeast-level team championship, and all eight teams from the Northeast will be participating in the championship.

“The championship will have a team of five chess players and will follow the round-robin format that requires every player or team to face all the other players or teams at least once. The winner or winners are those who have the best overall performance during the entire tournament,” expressed SCA general secretary Mahendra Dhakal at a press meet here on Wednesday.

With the overall prize money of Rs 5 lakh, the top three winning teams will receive cash prizes of Rs 2 lakh, Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 1 lakh respectively. The other participating teams will also receive consolation cash prizes.

The Sikkim Team are Thendup Tamang, Rohit Gurung, Rahul Gurung, Saurav Subba and Nirav Dhakal.
