GANGTOK,: Sikkim and Nagaland were crowned joint champions of the inaugural NECDC
Senior Women's Interstate Friendship T20 Tournament after the summit clash was
called off due to persistent rain in Nongkhrah, Meghalaya.
The tournament, organized by North East Cricket
Development Council and hosted by Meghalaya Cricket Association, had teams from
six north-eastern States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram,
Nagaland and Sikkim.
Sikkim senior women’s team remained unbeaten throughout
the tournament, topping the group stage with 8 points after two successive
wins. Sikkim had defeated Nagaland by four wickets in the group stage. In the
semi-final match against Manipur on Friday, which was pushed to a reserve day
due to rain, Sikkim clinched victory in a super over to book their spot in the
final.
The NECDC women’s tournament, launched this year, served
as a vital regional platform for the Sikkim women’s team and other participant
teams ahead of the upcoming Senior Women’s T20 Trophy. Sikkim’s group stage
contests will take place in Lucknow from October 17 to 24. The tournament offered
the players a crucial opportunity to fine-tune their skills and gain
competitive match practice before entering the national stage.
“We are confident that this experience will greatly
benefit our players as they head into the season’s fixtures with renewed spirit
and determination,” said Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA).
SICA president Tika Subba was present at the venue today
to support the Sikkim team, who now turn their focus to the challenges ahead in
the national competition.
