Two GDZP accountants arrested by Vigilance Police for misappropriating huge Govt funds

GANGTOK,: In a swift crackdown on corrupt public servants, the Sikkim Vigilance Police on February 21 arrested two accountants of Gangtok District Zilla Parishad (GDZP) on charge of misappropriation of huge government funds.

Searches were conducted at the residence of the two accused officials and incriminating material relevant to the investigation was seized. The two accused officials are held in custody for further investigation, said the Sikkim Vigilance Police.

A written complaint had been lodged by the GDZP Sachiva. Following this, an FIR was registered at the Sikkim Vigilance Police station against the two accused accountants charging them of conspiracy, cheating and forgery. The accused accountants were responsible for preparation for the preparation of salary bills of the GDZP staff.

It is alleged that during the years 2024-25, the accused officials had dishonestly, wilfully and illegally inflated their own monthly salary bills regularly and forwarded to the bank a false and fabricated list of payees for the payment of monthly salaries. The inflated salary amounts were credited to the accounts of the two accused officials, said the Sikkim Vigilance Police.

“The accused accountants continued to draw huge figures of salaries with apparent impunity, causing a deliberate and undue pecuniary loss to the government exchequer running into lakhs. The accused are suspected to have indulged in other financial improprieties and the loss of the exchequer is fear to be running into a couple of crores. However, investigations are continuing and further searches and arrests would follow,” said the Sikkim Vigilance Police.
