GANGTOK,: Nepali biographical sports film ‘Anjila’, based on the extraordinary life and football journey of Nepal women’s national football team captain and goalkeeper Anjila Tumbapo Subba, will have a special screening in Gangtok on August 20 at Vajra Cinema.
According to the press conference held in Journalists Union of Sikkim, Sada Production, Sikkim, is organising the special screening. The film is also scheduled for a Pan-India re-release following the special screening in Sikkim.
Speaking at the press conference on Wednesday, Sada Production founder Shyamashree Sherpa said that art, literature and sports have no boundaries and can inspire people across regions. She said Anjila Tumbapo has emerged as an inspirational footballer for many young people in Sikkim and neighbouring areas.
Sherpa highlighted Anjila’s humble family background and the difficulties she faced during her early years, saying that her struggles and determination make the film particularly inspiring and engaging.
Sikkim Football Association (SFA) general secretary Phurba Sherpa said that SFA has known Anjila as a talented footballer and expressed confidence that her life story would inspire many aspiring players. He welcomed the screening of the biopic in Sikkim and assured Sada Production of SFA’s support.
He also highlighted the good relationship between the SFA and All Nepal Football Association (ANFA), saying that the relationship would continue in the future. He noted that during the annual Governor’s Gold Cup, ANFA has supported SFA in the selection of teams, describing the cooperation as a positive gesture between the two football associations.
Similarly, Dr. Bibek Tiwari, vice president of the Futsal Association of Sikkim, welcomed the special screening, saying that it would provide an opportunity for people in Sikkim to learn more about the life and achievements of a prominent sports personality like Anjila Tumbapo.
Dr. Tiwari appealed to the public to support and encourage promising footballers and athletes. He also said that futsal is at an early stage of development in Sikkim and that the association plans to organise interactions and matches with Nepali players in the future, as Nepal has considerable experience and development in the sport.
Directed by Milan Chams, Anjila is based on the real-life journey of Anjila Tumbapo Subba, from her early struggles and challenges to becoming a national-level footballer and an inspiring leader.
At its core, the film is a story of dreams, determination, resilience and perseverance. It portrays the struggles and sacrifices behind an athlete’s success while highlighting the challenges faced by women pursuing their ambitions in sport.
One of the film’s distinctive features is that Anjila Tumbapo Subba portrays herself in the lead role, giving the story an authentic and deeply personal dimension. The film also features acclaimed actors including Dayahang Rai, Srijana Subba, Maotse Gurung, Bijay Baral and Sunil Thapa.
More than a sports film, Anjila celebrates the human spirit and the courage to pursue one’s dreams despite adversity. The film is expected to inspire young people, particularly aspiring athletes and women, to believe that dedication, perseverance and determination can help overcome even the most difficult obstacles.
