Kailash Kher, Bipul Chettri to headline musical performances
GANGTOK, : The Jorethang Makar Sankranti Maghey Mela, one of Sikkim’s most cherished festivals, is all set to enthral visitors from January 14 to January 21.
Addressing a press conference today, Zoom-Salghari MLA and chief patron of the event, Madan Cintury shared details about the vibrant celebrations planned this year.
Started in the 1950s, the Maghey Mela has been a historic cultural cornerstone of the State. This year, it coincides with the initiation of Sikkim’s 50 years of Statehood celebrations, adding a layer of significance to the festivities. The MLA emphasized the importance of preserving the festival's traditions and heritage while aiming to promote it on a national level.
Governor Om Prakash Mathur will attend the festival. He will also be laying the foundation stone for “Sandhya Aarti” at the confluence of the Rangeet and Rammam rivers.
The mela boasts an array of attractions.
The mela will have traditional performances including Dhan Nach and appearances by the winners of the 1972 Dhan Nach competition. The All India Chief Minister’s Gold Cup Tournament and constituency-level football matches for men and women will be held.
Among other attractions, ‘Orange Street’ will showcase of Sikkim's oranges, ‘Bangey Bazar’ will promote local breweries, SARAS Mela will have display of products from local self-help groups, busking, open bench press competition, book stalls, art galleries and a flower exhibition.
Adventure activities like boating, night camping and helicopter joyrides will also be organsied.
Kailash Kher, Bipul Chettri, Sabin Rai, Trishna Gurung and local sensations like Jetshen Donna Lama will light up the evenings with their performances.
The mela will also feature the sale of traditional cuisines, a Meena Mela, expo and Tambola. The night camping at the confluence of the Rangeet and Rammam rivers is also expected draw for adventure enthusiasts.
This year’s mela will run 24×7 over its eight-day duration, offering a non-stop festive experience, added Cintury, who was joined by Chief Minister’s press secretary Yougan Tamang, Jorethang SDM Monika Rai, MEO Dilip Dong and others at the press conference held at NJNP office.
