GANGTOK,: Lok Sabha MP (Sikkim) Indra Hang Subba on Monday wrote to Davud
Lalrinsanga, Special Commissioner of Police (SPUNER), Delhi Police, expressing
deep anguish and concern over the recent racial abuse incident in Malviya
Nagar, South Delhi, involving three women from Arunachal Pradesh.
In
his letter, the Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim highlighted that the women were
allegedly subjected to racial slurs, humiliation, and intimidation by their
neighbours following a minor dispute over repair work in their rented
accommodation, a press release informs.
According
to widely circulated video footage and media reports, the victims were verbally
abused with degrading remarks, stereotyped on the basis of appearance and
profession, and subjected to racially charged statements targeting people from
Northeast India.
Calling
the incident a grave violation of constitutional values, Indra Hang emphasized
that this was not merely a neighbourhood disagreement but a serious act of
racial hostility and cultural contempt. He stated that such behaviour
undermines the principles of dignity, equality, and unity, and causes deep
distress not only to the affected women but to Northeastern citizens across the
country.
The
MP also drew attention to the disturbing assertion of social and economic
superiority allegedly made by the accused, warning that misuse of perceived
privilege to intimidate ordinary citizens erodes public trust in the rule of
law. He strongly condemned the derogatory references to honest labour,
reiterating that every profession carries dignity and that no individual’s
humanity can be diminished by their background or livelihood.
Through
his communication, Indra Hang urged the Delhi Police to conduct a fair,
impartial, and thorough investigation based on evidence and witness statements;
ascertain the complete facts surrounding the incident, including verification
of video footage; and to initiate strict and appropriate legal action against
those found guilty under relevant provisions of law. He also urged to ensure
the safety, dignity, and protection of the affected women throughout the
investigative process.
Reaffirming
that Northeastern Indians are equal citizens of the country and not outsiders
or stereotypes, the MP from Sikkim stressed that India cannot claim unity while
tolerating racial humiliation, nor celebrate diversity while allowing everyday
racism to persist. He expressed confidence that swift and transparent action by
Delhi Police will reaffirm public faith in law enforcement and send a strong
message that racial discrimination and intimidation have no place in the
national capital, the release from his office mentions.
