Rangpo to get a modern transit hub, strengthening Sikkim’s gateway connectivity

GANGTOK,: The construction of the Transit Hub-cum-Commercial Complex at Rangpo, being developed under the Sikkim Integrated Urban Development Project (SIUDP) with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has commenced, marking the beginning of a major transformation of one of Sikkim’s key gateway towns.

With the onset of the favourable working season, site clearance, demolition and other preparatory works are underway at the existing SNT complex as the site is readied for construction of the landmark facility.

An official press release informs that the Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Jitendra Singh Raje, Urban Development Department, along with the SIUDP team, visited the project site on Friday to review the ongoing works, take stock of the progress and assess the arrangements for the next phase of construction.

The visit focused on the ongoing demolition and clearance activities, as well as construction quality, safety, timely execution and coordination among the concerned departments and agencies. Particular attention was given to ensuring that construction activities cause minimum inconvenience to the public, the release mentions.

With an estimated project cost of Rs 120 crore, the proposed seven-storey complex is envisioned as a vibrant, all-in-one destination bringing together transport, parking, shopping, recreation and essential public facilities under one roof, said the Urban Development Department.

The ground level will accommodate SNT bus operations, offices, ticket counters, passenger waiting areas and essential public facilities, while three dedicated levels will provide 119 car parking spaces. The upper levels will include retail and commercial spaces, a food court, offices, banks, banquet facilities, an indoor sports arena and entertainment areas, with a children’s play area proposed at the terrace level.

“The initiative reflects the vision of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) to create modern and well-planned urban centres across Sikkim. Located at the gateway to the State, Rangpo is emerging as an important node for the movement of people, goods and services. The new complex will add to this role by offering organised facilities for commuters and visitors, including parking for those travelling onward to the upcoming Railway Station, creating a convenient interchange point and strengthening Rangpo’s position as a key entry and transit point for Sikkim,” said the Urban Development Department.

As a key step towards enabling the redevelopment, SNT operations have been shifted from the existing Rangpo site to the newly constructed SNT premises at Mining area.

The Urban Development Department said it appreciates the cooperation and proactive coordination of the Transport Department in facilitating the relocation, which has enabled the project site to be made available for redevelopment. This coordinated effort has helped clear the way for the redevelopment of the site and commencement of the project, the department said.

The project also incorporates modern and sustainable features, including sensor-based parking, rainwater harvesting, solar panels and fire-safety systems, designed to make the best use of limited urban space while providing safer, more convenient and modern facilities.

The Rangpo Transit Hub is envisaged not only as a transportation and commercial facility but as an important urban renewal intervention for the town, bringing together everyday services, business, leisure and public facilities in one integrated space and contributing to a more organised, vibrant and welcoming Rangpo, said the Urban Development Department.
