GANGTOK,: The 67th birth anniversary of ‘Mato Kavi’ Jeewan Theeng was celebrated Monday jointly by Journalists Union of Sikkim (JUS) and literary group ‘Chiya Kavita’ at the JUS office here.

Social worker Kiran Rasaily, JUS president Bhim Rawat, journalists and college students took part in the programme which was conducted by journalist Prabin Khaling, a press release informs.

In his brief address, Rasaily said the birth anniversary celebration is a tribute to late Jeewan Theeng and his poetry. It is also important that people, especially the new generation learn more about poet Jeewan Theeng, he said.

Poems written by Jeewan Theeng were read out by the journalists and poets besides their self-composed poems.

The road in Development Area of Gangtok is named as Jeewan Theeng Marg in the poet’s honour in the late 80s.

Theeng, who passed away in 1978 at the young age of 23, is considered to be one of the most outstanding Nepali poets and writers of Sikkim. He is also referred to as revolutionary youth poet in Nepali literary circles.

A year before his death, the government of Nepal formally recognized his contribution to the Nepali language and conferred the Ratna Shri Swarna Padak on him, the release mentions.
