GANGTOK,: Sikkim clinched a 29-run win against Meghalaya at Cuttack today to kick start their Vijay Merchant Trophy campaign on a triumphant note.
Batting first, Sikkim posted 197 runs in the first innings. Denree Lepcha stole the limelight with a knock of 78 runs, leading the charge. However, Parvin Kuikel narrowly missed his maiden fifty by a solitary run. GJ Thakuria from Meghalaya starred with the ball for Meghalaya, claiming a five-wicket haul (5-51).
Sikkim bowlers then bowled out Meghalaya for a mere 104 runs in their first innings and gained a substantial first-innings lead of 93 runs. Parvin, displaying his all-around prowess, took three wickets for 22 runs.
In their second essay, Sikkim managed to put only 114 runs on the board. Denree once again emerged as the standout performer, scoring a vital 83 runs off 79 balls. A Marak proved lethal for Meghalaya, securing six wickets for 35 runs.
Chasing a target of 207, Meghalaya were bowled out for 178. D Nandi played a heroic innings scoring 95 runs, but ran out of partners in the quest for victory. Bhavya and Denree, a part-time bowler picked, four wickets each.
In a parallel encounter, Sikkim under-19 men’s team faced a setback, losing their Cooch Behar Trophy match against Meghalaya at home today.
