GANGTOK, : Pang Lhabsol Celebration Committee (PLCC), Statue of
Unity, MG Marg, organised an invitational inter-school quiz competition on
Tuesday on the theme “The History of Sikkim” as part of the pre-celebration
activities for Pang Lhabsol 2026. The event was held in memory of the
committee’s founding president, late Thukchuk Lachungpa, and sponsored by Yama
House Family at the auditorium hall of Tashi Namgyal Academy.
PM Shri Modern Senior Secondary School emerged as the winner, while PNG
School secured the second position, Bahai School stood third and Sang Senior
Secondary School finished fourth.
A total of 20 schools participated in the competition. The participating
schools were Greendale School, Tadong SSS, Sichey SSS, Tashi Namgyal Academy,
Modern SSS, Bahai School, Luing SSS, Ranka SSS, Rumtek SSS, West Point SSS,
Enchey SSS, Deorali Girls SSS, PNG School, Mount Zion, Pabyuk SSS, Bojoghari
SSS, Lingdok SSS, TNSS, Sang SSS and Biraspati Parsai SSS.
The event was conducted in two sessions. The first session began with
the arrival and registration of participating teams, followed by the arrival of
dignitaries and invitees. It included the inaugural session and the preliminary
round of the quiz, in which the participating schools were divided into four
groups.
The preliminary stage featured two direct-question rounds followed by a
buzzer round. The teams qualifying from the preliminary stage advanced to the
final round, which consisted of five rounds.
Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, Advisor, Forest and Environment Department and MLA
of Syari Constituency, attended the first session as the chief guest, while AD
Chettri, Director, Samagra Shiksha, was the guest of honour.
Ongden Tshering Lepcha, general secretary of the organising committee,
delivered the welcome address and highlighted the importance of education,
knowledge-sharing and healthy competition. He also spoke about the significance
of Pang Lhabsol as a celebration of Sikkim’s rich culture, heritage, unity and
reverence for Mount Khangchendzonga.
The organisers welcomed the participating students, teachers, school
representatives, quiz masters, parents, dignitaries and other guests, and
encouraged the students to participate enthusiastically while upholding the
spirit of healthy competition.
Lamtha congratulated the Pang Lhabsol Celebration Committee for
organising the quiz on Sikkim’s history as part of the Pang Lhabsol 2026
celebrations. He stressed the importance of involving the younger generation in
learning about and preserving the State’s history, culture and traditions.
He also encouraged students to make responsible use of digital platforms
to document and promote Sikkim’s heritage. Highlighting Pang Lhabsol as a
celebration of unity, harmony and shared heritage, he emphasised that
preserving Sikkim’s cultural identity is a collective responsibility.
The MLA also remembered late Thukchuk Lachungpa for his contributions to
art, culture, literature and social service, and said that inspiring young
people to value their heritage would be a fitting continuation of his legacy.
He appreciated the support of the organisers, teachers and parents and
encouraged students to carry Sikkim’s history and heritage forward with pride.
The second session was attended by Prince Guyrmed Namgyal as the chief
guest. The session began with a rendition of “De-Jong-Sil-Li-Yang Chag”,
followed by the National Anthem of the erstwhile Kingdom of Sikkim.
The main feature of the second session was the final round, in which the
teams that qualified from the preliminary stage competed against one another.
Addressing the gathering, Prince Guyrmed Namgyal congratulated the
winning team and all participating schools. He highlighted the educational
value of a quiz focused on the history of Sikkim, noting that such initiatives
help young people learn about the state’s history, culture, traditions and
heritage.
He appreciated the enthusiasm shown by the finalists, particularly their
efforts in tackling challenging questions, and welcomed the participation of
girl students. He encouraged them to pursue higher goals in the future.
Prince Guyrmed Namgyal also appreciated the family of late Thukchuk
Lachungpa and Yama House for their support and sponsorship of the event, as
well as the collective efforts of the organising committee. He expressed his
willingness to participate in similar celebrations in the coming years.
The quiz competition was conducted by quiz masters Ishala Sherpa and
Kunga Topden Bhutia.
Speaking at the programme, PLCC treasurer Karma Sonam Bhutia expressed
gratitude to the dignitaries, teachers, students and all others who contributed
to the success of the event. He stressed the importance of helping the younger
generation understand Sikkim’s history, culture, traditions and heritage.
The PLCC has been organising similar events annually as part of its
pre-Pang Lhabsol activities, with the objective of creating greater awareness
among the younger generation about Sikkim’s history, culture and traditions.
The top four teams were presented with trophies, certificates and cash prizes.
